Scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and partner institutions conducted a formative readiness and capacity assessment to deliver organized risk-stratified screening for prostate cancer at five pilot sites in the European Union and found that although clinical capacities were strong, significant gaps existed in enabling functions that are critical to programme success. The results were published in the journal eClinicalMedicine.
The researchers tested the readiness to implement a designated pathway integrating prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, risk stratification, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided biopsy decisions at five locations in the Prostate Cancer Awareness and Initiative for Screening in the European Union (PRAISE-U) project: one each in Ireland, Lithuania, and Poland and two in Spain. They scored 47 indicators across 11 domains.
The new findings indicate that scaling organized, risk-stratified prostate cancer screening in Europe should prioritize investments in programme infrastructure such as eligibility identification, invitation workflows, balanced information and counselling, systematic follow-up of screen-positives, quality assurance systems, and data governance and linkage (including cancer registry connectivity).
