Olsen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is with great sadness that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) learned of the passing of Dr J\u00f8rgen H. Olsen, a distinguished scientist and close collaborator of the Agency, who served as Director of the Danish Cancer Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 2000 until his retirement in 2017.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22199 aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 450px !important;\" title=\"Dr J\u00f8rgen H. Olsen\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/JH-Olsen-vignette.jpg\" alt=\"Dr J\u00f8rgen H. Olsen\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>IARC scientists had the privilege of working closely with Dr Olsen, who was consistently supportive of joint research and of opportunities for scientific exchange between our institutions. Under his leadership, scientists from the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology in Copenhagen engaged in numerous long-term collaborative projects with IARC and were able to spend time working at or visiting the Agency; some of these collaborations directly involved Dr Olsen himself. He was particularly supportive of early-career scientists, helping them to establish international networks that would contribute to their scientific and professional development. More broadly, as an internationally renowned cancer epidemiologist, he was always willing to share his expertise and provide valuable advice to colleagues.<\/p>\r\n<p>Dr Olsen\u2019s scientific expertise and commitment to the work of IARC are also reflected in his participation in no fewer than 10 volumes of the <em>IARC Monographs on the Identification of Carcinogenic Hazards to Humans<\/em>. Among his many contributions, he served as Overall Vice-Chair for <em>IARC Monographs<\/em> Volume 80, Non-Ionizing Radiation, Part 1: Static and Extremely Low-Frequency (ELF) Electric and Magnetic Fields, and as Chair of the Epidemiology Subgroup for both Volume 87, Inorganic and Organic Lead Compounds, and Volume 93, Carbon Black, Titanium Dioxide, and Talc.<\/p>\r\n<p>Those who had the opportunity to work with Dr Olsen will remember not only his outstanding scientific achievements but also his kindness, collegiality, and generosity towards colleagues. We are grateful for the many scientific exchanges, collaborations, and shared moments, which have left a lasting mark on our community.
